What Does SEO Stand For?
How to Apply and Benefit from SEO
Search
Engine
Optimization
Search Engine optimization is the process of promoting, optimizing, and prepping your site based on your chosen, targeted keywords. By optimizing your site for certain keywords, you are telling the search engines that your site has relevant information that would benefit someone searching for your keywords.
Taking the time to apply SEO techniques to your sites will prove to be extremely beneficial simply because most people do not look past one or two pages on google. Also, over 90% of people online use search engines to find a website related to their keyword or phrase.
If you want to improve the quality and amount of traffic to your site then it is crucial you learn to employ seo techniques. Always keep in mind that the whole point of SEO is to simply provide relevant content based on your keyword. Google, Yahoo, or any other search engines don't want someone to type in dog training and end up on a site about car modifications. Simple as that. You are essentially helping google locate the quality information on your site by making it search engine friendly.
The Search Engines
Everyday, spiders are sent throughout the internet by search engines on a mission to find and log information about websites. Search engine spiders record every possible piece of data about a website when "crawling" them. Spiders read left to right, column by column, along with recording and examining any links within the text.
Key Steps To Successful SEO
1) Include a site map on your web page. A site map is an organized and intuitive list of the links on your site. Not only will a site map help the search-engines spider your site more effectively, but it will also lead to a pleasing user experience, which is the main goal of a website. You want anyone who lands on your site to be able to easily follow the links in an efficient and logical manner.
2) At the end of each text entry or page on your website make sure to include a link that refers the user to another relevant page on your site.
i.e. A-B-C
By doing this you are not only making it easier for your site to be indexed by spiders, but you are also paving a path of links with the reader or user in mind.
3) Url, Title, and Meta tags
The url of your website is important and should be closely related or of the exact keyword your targeting. For example, if your main keyword is dog training, then you would want a domain name like dogtrainingdotcom. Of course, many domain names are already taken so you need to get a little creative. As long as your keyword is located at the beginning of the url rather than following a phrase or word you will be fine. For example, your keyword is dogtraining. You want the domain dogtrainingtipsdotcom rather than tipsfordogtrainingdotcom. (I chose dogtrainingtips because dogtraining is most likely taken)
Your domain should not be extremely long. i.e. dogtrainingtipsforyourfamilyandfriendsdotcom
dogtrainingtipsdotcom
Which would you type in?(Of course, the point of this is search engine optimization, however, if someone comes across a website they like and decides to tell a friend about it, it should be somewhat easy to remember.)
Stay away from hyphens and numbers within the url.
Next, the title of your site is extremely important in ranking well for a certain keyword. There is not much explanation needed here. Just make sure the title tag is relevant to what your web page is about. For example, neweggdotcom is an online electronics store mainly focusing on computers. This is what their source code looks like.
<title>Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!</title>
Be sure to include your targeted Keyword or keyword phrase in the title tags.
4) Meta tags- These tags are basically the keywords that you are targeting. By making relevant meta tags for your site, you have allowed your site to be ranked very well in the search engines.
Increasing Your Page Rank
Now that you have made every effort to optimize your website for certain keywords, it is time to work on off page optimization.
Google, along with other search engines, will often base their search results on how many other websites have voted for your site. Simply, your page rank is determined by incoming, relevant links. The more links that are pointing to your site, the more likely you will gain a high page rank therefore pushing you to the top of the search results.
How do you get a high page rank?
1) Write articles and submit them to article directories like ezinearticles and goarticles. Upon submission, make sure you have links pointing back to your website in your resource box. Your resource box is the place where article directories allow you to put links for self promotion or any other kind of promotion. If you put direct affiliate links in the resource box, your article will probably be rejected.
2) Post Blog comments on blogs related to your niche. This will give you bonus traffic along with bumping up your site in the search results.
3) Forum Marketing- Find forums related to your niche and become an active participant. You will often be able to edit your signature file. Your signature is where you will put links redirecting people back to your site.
